Generally, besides the physical injuries and mental anguish of victims, road crashes result in massive financial losses to individuals and the economy. According to the World Health Organization news, most countries lose 3% of their domestic product to road crashes-related costs.

Michigan Car Accident Types & Statistics

Michigan roads witness car accidents every day. In most cases, the accidents result from the driver’s negligence, such as drunk or drowsy driving, speeding, distracted driving, failing to yield right of way, aggressive driving, etc. These range from single-vehicle accidents, T-bone crashes, rear-end and head-on collisions, sideswipes, and rollovers. While some are low-impact crashes that only result in property damage, others cause death or severe injuries to the victims.

For instance, the recent report released by the Michigan Department of State Police in 2021 showed that out of the 323,048 accidents involving passenger cars, SUVs, or vans, 1,111 were fatal, and 64,666 resulted in injuries, while 257,271 caused property damage.

Here are more statistics from the report.

  • Distracted driving was responsible for 22,246 passenger car, SUV, or van accidents. 16,041 resulted in property damage, 6,147 injuries, and 58 were fatal.
  • Drug-related crashes involving passenger cars, SUVs, or vans totaled 3,824, with 268 resulting in fatalities, 1,758 injuries, and 1,798 causing property damage.
  • Out of the crashes linked to alcohol consumption, 10,749 involved passenger cars, SUVs, or vans, with 6,038 reporting property damage, 4,410 injuries, and 301 being fatal.
  • Passenger cars, SUVs, and vans caused 1,352 pedestrian accidents. One hundred sixty-one were fatal, while 1,013 resulted in injuries.
  • Accidents involving passenger cars, SUVs, vans, and motorcycles accounted for 1,235 reported cases, out of which 97 were fatal.

While accidents are sometimes inevitable, statistics show that most are caused by driver negligence. If you suspect the other driver’s negligence caused your collision, our team can help you investigate and hold them accountable.

Impact of Car Crashes

Car crashes can have devastating effects depending on their severity. The impact of car accidents is life-changing, from physical to mental and financial distress.

  • Physical impact – A minor accident can result in disruptive bodily injury such as whiplash. As the severity of the crash increases, the possible physical injuries intensify. These could be burns, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal bleeding, traumatic brain injuries, etc.
  • Emotional impact – An accident can cause varying levels of emotional distress, depending on how disruptive it is and the injuries sustained. Typical forms of emotional anguish include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, humiliation, anger, anxiety, insomnia, shock, etc.
  • Economic impact – Crashes result in financial losses for the victims, insurance companies, and the government. Even if the victims get compensated, the award does not always cover every lost opportunity. Significantly, the loss increases if the accident incapacitates the victim, keeping them from working.

Similarly, the government also loses the resources spent on responding to emergencies and attending to the accident victims and their cases.
